Day 3

Day three, and we're exhausted! But first, a recap of last night's soccer match. First the boys played the little kids, and had a great time.

After that, it was on to the "big kids", who were really excited to show us their stuff. As you can see in the picture, these guys are big, and not really kids. The game was great, and we were impressed by how good each of their players were. Final score, 4-9 (ticos win.)

Today, construction on our court officially began. The work was incredibly difficult, but each of our boys gave 110%, and made great progress. To construct the court, the ground needed to be leveled, rebar was laid down and tied, concrete was mixed (in small, portable mixers), carried by wheelbarrows, and finally, poured onto the court. It was hard but satisfying work, and all of our guys were more than ready for dinner (and a swim in the town's swimming pool!) at the end of the day. Lots of pictures below - enjoy!

The bags of concrete were heavy for us gringos. (110 pounds each!)

The locals just set them on their backs to carry them!

Some of us piled into a local car to go pick up a second cement mixer. During the first part of the day, we were working with only one mixer... and at that speed we were thinking we might not be done with half of the court by the time we left Costa Rica. Our Peace Corp volunteer eventually was able to round up another mixer, and after lunch things went much faster! We are encouraged and hopeful again that we might be able to finish the court on time.

We had a great dinner, spaghetti, and are now relaxing and enjoying the evening!! Everyone is anxious to get back to work in the morning- now that things are moving along so much faster. The rains held off today so we were able to work well into the afternoon. We are hoping for the same tomorrow!

(Love it that you jumped right in there, Amber, and got as dirty and sweaty as the boys...ha!) Gonna give your two angels extra hugs and love on Thursday, since I'm sure they're missin you (and you them!) ♥
