Day 1

Our first full day in Costa Rica started well (after we all finally fell asleep after last night's bug incident) with breakfast at Liz's house. Liz is the host mother of Cassi, our Peace Corps partner in the town. Liz speaks no English, but loves having her house invaded by these boys, and is a fantastic cook!

After breakfast, the team headed into the town of Nicoya for the region's holiday celebration. Getting to town was challenging, to say the least, as we all piled into a local bus that was already 20 or 30 people over its capacity limit when it picked us up. As the bus drove closer to Nicoya, it stopped frequently to pick up more and more passengers. (!!) While uncomfortable, the guys had a blast squeezed into this bus with the locals.

Once in Nicoya, the team walked around the festival and settled on pizza for lunch (the comforts of home!) On the way to the bus depot to go home, the skies opened up, and it rained harder than any of us had ever seen before! The rain inspired a few of the guys (and the coaches!) to go outside and experience the weather first hand. (Some even showered in it once we were home!)

The team has started befriending a few of the children in the town, who are all very curious about basketball, and us! A few of the kids have even challenged the guys to a soccer game tonight, and the children are so excited to share their favorite sport with us, as we're sharing our favorite sport with them once we build our basketball court!

Speaking of the court, construction begins bright and early, at 6am tomorrow. We can't wait to begin the project, and hope we can get good, bug-free sleep tonight!
